Wertz had gone 1 for 4 in the game to this point and represented the winning run. Law pitched aggressively to Wertz, who wound up bouncing out to short to end the game. Zarilla had three hits on the day. Houtteman allowed one earned run on seven hits, struck out one and walked three. Ken Raffensberger pitched a complete game as well in getting the loss. He allowed four earned runs on nine hits while striking out three and walked one.

The Spiders took a two run lead in the bottom of the seventh, ruining what seemed to be a easy shutout bid by Ewell Blackwell before losing the lead in the top of the ninth on a two out single by Granny Hamner. In the bottom of the ninth, a crucial error by Billy Goodman on a hard hit ball to the gap in left led to a game winning single by Andy Seminick as the Spiders even their four game set with the Mutuals in dramatic fashion. Vic Wertz and Johnny Groth had three hits each for the Spiders, Wertz getting a home run while Groth getting a double included in those hits. Wertz drove in three on the day. Fred Hutchinson went the distance for the Spiders, allowing three earned runs on eight hits. He struck out three and walked two. Blackwell was pitching a hell of a game, leading 1-0 through six and a third before things fell apart when he walked Buddy Kerr and Hutchinson before Wertz launched his circuit shot. Blackwell allowed three earned runs on six hits, struck out six and walked four.

Yogi Berra hit a two run shot in the fifth to break a 2-2 tie, while Larry Jansen and the bullpen held on the rest of the way, as the Spiders edge the Mutuals and are a win away from taking the series. Jansen went six and a third and allowed three earned runs on ten hits. He struck out two and walked one in picking up his fifth win. Relivers Jerry Staley and Normie Roy pitched shutout ball the rest of the way. Walker Cooper gave the Spiders fits all day, as the Mutuals catcher went 4 for 4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Losing pitcher Eddie Lopat went seven and a third and allowed three earned runs on eight hits. He struck out one and walked one. Berra's home run was one of three hits he had on the day, the other two were singles.

Yogi Berra came up in the bottom of the ninth with one out and the bases loaded with his team down by two, and grounded into a heartbreak inducing game ending double play, as the Mutuals gain a split of this exciting series with the Spiders. Berra ended up with a pair of singles and a run scored on the day. Vic Wertz had a double and two singles and reached on a walk, so these two guys provided most of the excitement for the home team. Spiders starter Curt Simmons went six tough innings and allowed four earned runs on four hits while striking out six and walking three. Junior Walsh took over and pitched two scoreless innings before giving up a two run tater to Bob Elliott in the top of the ninth, giving the Mutuals a 6-4 advantage. Elliott finished with two hits, two RBI and three runs scored. He reached base in all five of his plate appearances, including two walks and an error. Bob Lemon got the start for the Mutuals, and he ran into trouble early, plagued by a passed ball and a fielding error in a four run Spider second. Lemon ended with five innings pitched, allowing three earned runs on seven hits. He struck out four and walked two.

The Sun Kings score four in the seventh and then escaped a ninth inning rally to make it two in a row over the second place Lecheros. Don Lenhardt had another three hit day, all singles. Roy Campanella drove in three on a seventh inning blast that broke a 3-3 tie. 'The Chief,' Allie Reynolds, went eight an a third in getting the ugly win. He allowed six earned runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking six. Johnny Schmitz couldn't buy a break, losing his eleventh as he allowed six earned runs over six and two-thirds on eight hits. He struck out one and walked four. The Sun Kings have hit eight home runs in the first two games of this series, all by different players!

The sun Kings took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth, and their bullpen suffered a major meltdown, as the Lecheros score four to win the game and put themselves in a nice position to earn a split of the series with a win tomorrow. Vern Law got the start for the Sun Kings, and he went six and allowed one earned run on five hits. He struck out four and walked two, and with the help of a three run home run from Campanella, had a 4-1 lead when he left the game. His opponent was Early Wynn, shooting for his twelfth win in a row. Johnny Vander Meer followed Law to the hill, and pitched two innings of scoreless ball, so it looked like Wynn was about to lose his second game of the year as the game entered the bottom of the ninth. Lefty Ken Johnson began things by walking righty Ralph Kiner before giving up a single to Duke Snider and walking Eddie Robinson. This ended Johnson's stint, as he got the quick hook and Jack Kramer took his place. Kramer gave up back to back singles followed by a bases-loaded walk, and the game was tied. Bill Northey pinch-hit for Howie Judson, and grounded up the middle while Danny Murtaugh trotted home with the winning run. Wynn went eight and allowed four earned runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked one.

The Lecheros almost pull this one out, scoring five in the bottom of the ninth, but reliever Doyle Lade got the three outs he needed in dramatic fashion as the Sun Kings edge the Lecheros and take the series in the process. Campanella hit a bases-loaded triple in the seventh, part of a big seven run inning for the Sun Kings. They led 9-3 going into the bottom of the ninth with Vander Meer taking the hill for his second inning of work. He had walked two in the eighth, but got out of the jam. In the ninth he started things off by walking Billy Johnson and Rube Walker, then serving up a single to pinch hitter Monte Irvin. Out goes Vander Meer, in comes Doyle Lade, who gives up a single to Slaughter and a double to Phil Rizzuto. Kiner strikes out, then Snider singles in Rizzuto. Five runs in and the tying run at second after Eddie Robinson's groundout to first moves the Duke up ninety feet. Danny Murtaugh came up and fouled off six pitches before bouncing out to Al Dark at short, and that was the ball game. Craziness!! Campanella wound up with five RBI in the game. He drove in eleven runs during this series. Rookie Carl Erskine got the win, going six and allowing three earned runs on five hits. He struck out one and walked four. Lou Brissie was roughed up for six earned runs in six and a third. He gave up nine hits, struck out one and walked five. The Sun Kings have caught the Spiders for third place in the division and are four out of the top spot. They go home to play four against the Mutuals, and some tickets are still available!

Hank Thompson had a three hit day for the Sun Kings, while Wally Westlake drove in three with his seventh jack of the year. Granny Hamner had a three hit day for the Mutuals, while Elliott drove in three. Erv Palica got the start for the Sun Kings and he went five and allowed three earned runs on eight hits. He struck out two and walked one. Art Houtteman started for the Mutuals and went six and two thirds, allowing four earned runs on eight hits while striking out two and walking three.

Marlin Stuart took over and recorded two outs, but not before five more runs had crossed the plate. Willie Ramsdell went seven in getting the win. He allowed two earned runs on nine hits, struck out three and walked three. Blackwell allowed five earned runs on six hits and also walked three and struck out three. Sun Kings first baseman Don 'The Mon' Lenhardt homered and scored three runs on the day.

The Mutuals set a 5Y record for greatest margin of victory in a game, as they destroy the Sun Kings by four touchdowns. Eddie Lopat had no trouble getting the win. The only question was would he get a shutout, and he did, tossing a four hitter while walking one to turn the trick. Lopat had two hits, three RBI, walked three times and scored four runs. Bob Elliott and Walker Cooper each had four hits. Elliott and Dom DiMaggio each drove in five runs. The following Mutuals had a three hit game: Al Zarilla, DiMaggio, Sid Gordon and Red Schoendienst. Allie Reynolds got the start on a day he probably wished he stayed home. He lasted one third of an inning and gave up ten runs, nine of them earned. The Sun Kings used six relievers, none of whom pitched scoreless ball with the exception of the final pitcher used, Erv Palica, who went one and a third and allowed one hit, struck out one and walked one. The Sun Kings dropped a game, and are now three behind the Mutuals.

As Doctor Smith on 'Lost in Space' used to say, 'Oh, the pain, the pain!' The Mutuals unload again with a seven run first, as they go on to pummel the Sun Kings, outscoring them 42-1 over the last two games of their four game series. The Sun Kings had a shot at gaining serious ground on the Mutuals after taking the first two games of this set. Now they are back where they started, four behind the leaders. Bob Elliott started things off by depositing an 0-1 fastball into the leftfield stands to give the Mutuals a 1-0 lead. Before you could munch a couple of handfulls of popcorn, the Mutuals had scored seven off of Sun Kings starter Vern Law, and the rout was on. Law managed just one inning and gave up seven hits. The Mutuals meted out more punishment in the form of seven more runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, sinking any faint hopes that Sun Kings fans had of climbing up the ladder during this series. Bob Lemon went all - the - way, allowing one earned run on nine hits. He struck out five and walked four. For Lemon, it was his first win in his last seven starts. Birdie Tebbetts and Luke Easter had three hits apiece for the conquerors.

The Spiders got back to back homers from Vic Wertz and Johnny Groth to cap off their fourth. Groth ended the day with three hits, while Wertz drove in four on the afternoon. Fred Hutchinson went six in getting the win. He allowed two earned runs on seven hits, struck out two and walked two. It's the fourth straight win for Hutch, and he's won eight of his last nine starts. Johnny Schmitz continues to pitch in hard luck, getting tagged for his twelfth loss of the year. He went three and two thirds and allowed five earned runs on nine hits. He walked two.

Spiders rightfielder Vic Wertz had one of those perfect days, going 5 for 5, scoring six runs (he drew a walk in his first at bat). Gene Hermanski had four hits, all wingles, and he drove in three. First baseman Jack Phillips also drove in three. Gerry Staley went seven to get the win, allowing three earned runs on seven hits. He struck out six and walked five. McDermott took the early exit after going two and allowing five runs, four of them earned. He gave up seven hits, struck out one and walked three. Enos Slaughter had three hits and walked twice for the Lecheros.

The Mutuals get a big homer from shortstop Granny Hamner, while the bullpen did a great job, giving the division leaders a big win to even the series at a game apiece. Hamner's two run shot lifted the Mutuals to a 6-2 lead, and came off of reliever Fred Hutchinson who was not scheduled to start any of the games in this series. The Spiders lose an absolute heartbreaker, as a pair of seventh inning errors by Jerry Coleman open the floodgates to a Mutuals five run inning, erasing a 4-0 Spiders lead just like that! Spiders starter Ken Raffensberger was cruising through six, tossing a two hit shutout. Johnny Hopp led off the bottom of the seventh, and he hit a bounding ball to Coleman at second, who muffed it. Dom DiMaggio came up and hit one to Coleman, and he booted it into no-mans land between first and second putting runners at the corners with no out. Raffensberger crashed and burned from there, giving up a double to Sid Gordon, a single to Birdie Tebbetts, a walk to Shoendienst, then back to back singles to Sam Dente and pinch hitter Cass Michaels. Phew! Elmer Singleton and Sam Zoldak pitched scoreless ball the rest of the way, as Eddie Lopat picked up the win. Lopat went seven and allowed four runs on eleven hits, and just did not look sharp today. The big inning put him ahead as the pitcher of record, and he'll take it. Raffensberger went seven and allowed five runs, three of them earned. He gave up six hits, struck out two and walked one. Johnny Groth led the Spiders with three hits.

The Sun Kings fought back to tie it in the second, then the Lecheros pulled away with three runs in the third, and they hold on to take the opener of three against the Sun Kings. Erskine gave up three taters in the contest, leaving the game after two and two-thirds and allowing seven earned runs on nine hits. He struck out two and walked two. Vern Law took over and pitched three and a third frames of shutout ball. Jack Kramer followed with two zeros on the scoreboard, then Johnny Vander Meer threw one inning of scoreless ball. Lou Brissie went five, running out of gas as he finished his fifth inning on the hill. He allowed four earned runs on seven hits while striking out one and walking three. Howie Judson came in and pitched two frames, allowing one earned run. Jesse Flores pitched two scoreless innings to earn the save.

Nothing like a seven run inning to make your day, and that's what the Lecheros got in the top of the fifth, as they hang on to topple the Sun Kings to make it two in a row over the hapless bunch. Billy Johnson, who holds down the third base bag for the Lecheros, had three hits and a walk, while catcher Les Moss socked one out, driving in three runs on the day. Robin Roberts was on top of things today, going seven to get the win. He allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits. He struck out five and walked three. Erv Palica had a 1-0 shutout going until the fifth, and ended up allowing all seven runs in the seventh. He gave up seven hits, struck out two and walked four.

The Sun Kings get a measure of revenge, scoring four in the eighth to turn a close game into a rout, as they avoid the sweep and send the fans home happy...woozy from '3 Dime Beer Night,' but happy nontheless. Duke Snider connected for another home run in the opening frame to give his club an early 2-0 lead. This was cut in half in the third when Gil Coan singled in Bill Howerton, who had just smacked his second double of the game. Johnny Pramesa parked a cloud burster into the left field seats with Coan aboard to give the Sun Kings the lead. Five singles and two walks produced the four run cushion in the bottom of the eighth. Willie Ramsdell got the win, going seven and allowing two earned runs on eight hits. He struck out two and walked four. Howerton and Coan each had three hits on the afternoon, then headed straight to the bar afterwards to 'Have some of that thirty cent beer!' laughed Coan to reporters as he came off the field after the game. Johnny Schmitz lost his thirteenth despite pitching a good game. He went seven and allowed three earned runs on eight hits while striking out four and walking three. The Division Two record for most losses by a pitcher is 16 by the Spiders Larry Jansen (5-16, 5.01). In case you're wondering, the 5Y League record for losses by a pitcher was set last season by the Red Kegs Ned Garver, who finished the year 15-17, 3.94.

Spiders pitcher Fred Hutchinson received plenty of run support while he pitched his way to a shutout in the first of three with the visiting Sun Kings. The Sun Kings committed three first inning errors which led to two Spider tallies. Vic Wertz popped a two run shot in the bottom of the second to make it 4-0. Andy Seminick's RBI groundout made it 5-zip, and four walks and a single in the eighth gave the home team two more runs. Hutchinson allowed seven hits, struck out five and walked seven, and is 6-1 over his last eight starts. Allie Reynolds went four and a third in his start for the Sun Kings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking one.

The Sun Kings return the favor, getting a nice shutout performance from Vern Law, while Eddie Stanky delivered the killer blow in the top of the ninth in a tight one. Stanky had four hits on the afternoon, while teammate Gil Coan had three hits and also reached on an error in the first. Jack Phillips had a three hit day for the Spiders. Law allowed seven hits in earning his first win of the year, and had runners at first and second with two out in the ninth and left hander Vic Wertz at bat. Wertz had gone 1 for 4 in the game to this point and represented the winning run. Law pitched aggressively to Wertz, who wound up bouncing out to short to end the game. Law struck out three and walked three. Larry Jansen pitched very well, but was out of the game with a runner on in the seventh. He went six and two thirds with no runs allowed. He gave up eight hits, struck out six and walked two.

Roy Campanella smashed a two run homer in the ninth, but it turned out to be too little, too late, as the Spiders hold on to edge the Sun Kings and take the series. Gene Hermanski and Jerry Coleman each had three hits for the Spiders, and each hit a home run. Curt Simmons went six and a third to get the win. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking four. Carl Erskine took the hard luck loss, going five and a third and allowing five runs, two of them earned, on seven hits. He struck out five and walked four.

Early Wynn tossed another complete game win, losing a shutout with two out in the ninth, putting the Lecheros one game behind the front running Mutuals. Sid Gordon launched a solo homer to deep center to mar the shutout bid by Wynn, and this was followed by a two base error committed by 'The Scooter' at short. Pinch hitter Billy Goodman flied out to center to end the ballgame. Wynn gave up seven hits, struck out five and walked one. He's seven away from becoming the first ever twenty game winner in Division Two. Mutuals outfileder Al Zarilla had a three hit game, all singles. Bob Lemon took the loss, allowing three earned runs over six and a third innings. He gave up eleven hits, struck out five and walked three.

The Lecheros came out swinging in the fourth, posting seven runs en route to a thrashing of the Mutuals, and placing both teams in a tie for first with two games left before the stat break. Lecheros starter 'Sweet' Lou Brissie pitched the teams's second straight complete game, allowing one earned run on five hits. He struck out three and walked three. Duke Snider homered and doubled and drove in four runs on the day. Art Houtteman took the loss and left the ball game early after getting pounded for seven runs, all unearned, in three and two thirds innings pitched. He allowed three hits, struck out three and walked seven. 'Terrible, just terrible out there today,' Houtteman said after. 'No stuff whatsoever, no control, walked everyone. Just a bad outing. Gotta do a whole lot better next time,' he said.

There is a new first place team in Division Two, and it's the Lecheros, as they get their third straight complete game from their starting pitcher and huge run support to crush the Mutuals, outscoring them 22-3 in this sweep. Robin Roberts improved his record to 8-4, allowing one unearned run on five hits while striking out six and walking one. He is now 5-1 in his last six starts. The Lecheros were benefactors of eleven walks given up by Mutuals pitchers, and they took advantage of these by getting the timely hits with runners on base. Only Enos Slaughter and Roberts completed the game with no runs scored. Bill Johnson had a three hit day including a double and a stolen base. Ewell Blackwell never made it through the third inning, leaving after allowing five earned runs in two and a third. He gave up three hits, struck out four and walked seven.
